PEPPERTREE LANE had looked a horse with a bright future when winning at Ripon on his reappearance and underlined his potential here. He bowled along happily in front before being strongly pressed by the runner-up more than a furlong out. Although he has a tendency to carry his head a tad higher than ideal, he is nothing if not determined and proved relentless under pressure all the way to the line. A winning margin of three and a half lengths ensures he will be into the 90s when next he appears, but the lightly aced colt could well remain a step ahead of thehandicapper.
Anna Pavlova, who progressed throughout last season, started this term on a pleasing note. She briefly looked likely to give the winner a real fight before being put in her place, but, although plainly second-best, she beat the otherscomfortably enough. She may not be easy to place off a mark of 91, but, on this evidence, she has clearly trained on from two to three.
Damelza, dropped back from ten furlongs, was pushed along a fair way from home and could never get in a serious challenge. Better ground may suit her. Bonnie Prince Blue, who had run respectably when upped to this trip at Newbury last time, ran a very ordinary race and may have struggled to cope with underfoot conditions. Tempsford Flyer, whose two previous outings this season were on Polytrack, found this a struggle and is another who has to be forgiven, because of the ground [T O'R]
