Skhilling Spirit, who proved he acted on the soft last season, ran a fine race, coming out of the pack to chase the winner, to whom he was conceding a stone. He will not be easy to place off a mark of 95, but he remains a capable performer.
The Snatcher, who made the running, was found wanting when push came to shove and was comfortably outpointed by the front two in the closing stages. Angel Voices, a maiden who was 3lb out of the handicap, was struggling inside the final quarter-mile. Choysia moved through smoothly early in the straight, but that was before the race had begun in earnest. Once it did, she was found wanting for stamina over this trip and on these testing conditions. Mr Sandicliffe never got in a blow. As for Bentong, he got warm beforehand and, after tracking the leaders, he was beaten in a matter of strides entering the last couple of furlongs. Ludovico, back after a month off and back on turf, was well held on his first try in testing ground. [T O'R]
