Analyis of the race

A cracking early-season hunter chase in prospect, with a couple of these having already shown themselves among the higher echelons and some of the others having the potential to join them, but it was rendered slightly less informative than it might have been by a steady pace. That said, this was still a performance full of promise from DENVALE, the youngest horse in the field, who led from the sixth fence and stayed on well for a workmanlike success. He had looked a useful hunter in the making when winning at Towcester last season but failed to build on it two subsequent outings - the ground may have turned against him but his trainer believes all was not well in the yard at the time. He probably has plenty more improvement in him and is entitled to be regarded as a possible for the Christie's Foxhunter Chase - he is a notably good jumper and that alone should ensure he wins more races.

Marrasit had shown improved form when second in John Corbet Cup at Stratford last May and confirmed that promise with an encouraging return to action. She would have given the winner more to do had she not made a bad mistake at the last fence and should go one place better in this company in the coming weeks.

KnifeEdge is another probably not as good as he was but this trip is probably too far for him and he was never travelling after a mistake down the far side on the final circuit - he will be better judged when returned to a shorter distance.

The Butterwick Kid ran well for a long way, only tiring from the third-last fence, up against opposition probably a shade too strong, and looks to retain the ability to win the race at the May meeting here which he won in 2003 and 2005.

Mister Friday ran poorly, never jumping fluently some way out and eventually pulled up. The ground may well have been too soft for him and he bounced back from a similar effort in this contest last year to prove himself a smart hunter so he is well worth another chance.
