A fortunate scorer at Wincanton, Simon showed a resolute side to his make-up, surviving some minor mistakes and getting the trip best.
Mount Clerigo was defending a three-race unbeaten record at this course and jumped more fluently than of late, but found the concession of almost a stone to the winner ultimately beyond him.
Precious Bane was 4lb higher than for his defeat over a longer trip at Bangor. He needs to dominate but was persistently hounded by Mount Clerigo, which served to break his resolve and he was only playing for minor money over the last two fences.
Bob Bob Bobbin, considered a Welsh National horse for next season by his trainer, travelled well in the ground but is too high in the weights.
Lord Olympia seems to be paying the price for a busy campaign.
