Both the winner and runner-up Ossmoses showed that it paid to be on the pace. Nothing came from the back and the deep ground claimed a host of scalps on the final circuit with only seven of the 18 runners completing.
Since winning a Listed race over three miles in the soft a year ago, G V A Ireland has enjoyed mixed fortunes, but encouraging efforts prior to this proved to be an accurate guide. He had only Ossmoses to worry about in the straight and matched that rival at each fence, quickening up to win like a fresh horse. He will be entered for the Irish National but is unlikely to encounter these conditions at Fairyhouse.
Ossmoses was 12lb higher than for his Haydock win but had ideal conditions in which to put his best foot forward. He jumped and travelled well as his rider steered awide course, but his trainer might rue the fact that he'd been forced to miss work when snowdrifts covered the gallops. He will be pointed at the Scottish National but the chances of him getting testing conditions at Ayr are remote.
Victory Gunner, winner ofthe Lincolnshire National at Christmas, put that experience to good use without ever looking a danger to the principals. He is a young horse with limited experience of fences, and is therefore open to further improvement.
Trust Fund would have wonhere last month but for falling. Now 4lb higher, he survived an early mistake before working his way into contention, only to tire. He is too in and out to be relied on.
Control Man, who took a walk in the market, proved competitive for three and a half miles. He has been lightly raced this season and could pick up a decent prize.
Philson Run might have found this coming too quick after his win at Newcastle in the Eider and never looked like getting competitive in his bid to repeat last year's success.
King Bee had been raised 9lb for his Haydock win and found this more competitive race all too much, given his relative lack of experience.
