Even allowing for the winner to have probably been below his best, Bel Canto ran a good race having not been helped by his wide drawn and then lugging in to the left in the closing stages.
Great Chieftain wanted to get on with it from the outset and kept on well under the circumstances. He progressed over sprint distances last season and it will be interesting to see whether he drops back to six furlongs steps up to a mile.
Just Lille and Light Sentence were never able to get in a blow, but both did enough to suggest there will be better to come from this pair too with time and experience.
