It was a race-winning manoeuvre for, although Malcheek was soon in pursuit, Culhane had got first run and it told. Seven furlongs looks the ideal trip for the ultra-consistent winner, who also took a maiden over this distance at York last term and has been out of the frame only once in 11 outings.
Malcheek likes this track, having registered both his career wins over course and distance last May before the handicapper got hold of him. The four-year-old had slipped back to a decent mark, but no doubt the assessor will hike him back up again. He showed last year, though, that he can take two quick races and trainer Tim Easterby - whose string is in grand form - is likely to look for another opportunity in the near future.
Those who sat off the pace never got into the contest with Dhaular Dhar, Isidore Bonheur and Tagula Sunrise all catching the eye as they stayed on late.
