Analyis of the race

The best race on the card in terms of quality and quantity, and it produced a driving finish with AU COURANT, the winner of a bumper on his debut over two miles at Worcester last year, prevailing from Barton Legend. The winner is described as a "big baby" by the trainer's assistant, who added that there were no fancy plans for Au Courant this season, with a career over fences beckoning next term - and stiffer tracks.

Barton Legend looked sure to play a leading role, and looked the winner jumping two out. He just led over the last but was run out of it in the closing stages. He's consistent and should get his head in front again soon.

Caged Tiger's fourth-placed effort in a bumper on his debut at Carlisle meant he was entitled to consideration, but that event was in March 2004. Had he not lacked for fitness, he could well have won this. He ran a cracker to be third, and will obviously improve.

R Thornton reported Assumptalina had a breathing problem
