That played to the strengths of SIR MONTY, who continued his progressive profile from last season to keep track with the handicapper. He was expected to just need this return and the trip looks a bare minimum so there could be further improvement to come and the handicapper can hardly hit him for this narrow win. Hecould be back at this track for a 1m6f handicap next and looks a stayer to follow.
Velvet Waters ran her usual game race and deserves plenty of credit as she had to fend off fellow front-runners at a pace early but she kept finding for strong pressure against the inside rail and was only just nailed by a improving rival.
Ocean Avenue was the other pacesetter and also kept battling away to suggest he is still on a handy enough mark for a similar race.
