This was by no means a strong race, even allowing for many of the best apprentices around taking rides, and most of the field are better known for their exploits on the all-weather. Predictably the field did split in the opener, given the amount of runners.
Crystal Mystic set a really good gallop down the stands' side rail and set up the race quite nicely for JOY AND PAIN, who was having only his second run for the stable. He had never won on turf but was nicely handicapped on his winning all-weather form, and appeared to score with plenty in hand. The first-time visor also helped him concentrate.
Drumming Party lost in quite controversial circumstances here just over a week ago, and was effectively a winner without a penalty. He was taken to the far side after the stalls opened but hung badly to the right inside the final furlong, ending up on the stands' side. He is missing his left eye, which may have contributed to the drift to the right.
Hammer Of The Gods, having his first run for a new stable, has not trod on turf at a racecourse since September 2004, so his effectiveness on the surface was still to be proven. He appeared to act on it well enough and clearly won the ‘race' on the far side from the slightly frustrating Mina.
Given how quickly Crystal Mystic went off, he did well to finish as close as he did. Nothing else in the field really caught the eye behind.
