Analyis of the race

A strongly run contest and no stopping veteran HAIL THE CHIEF, who completed his hat-trick in some style to suggest at nine that he is in the form of his British racing life, having won Graded races in his American stint in between.

He was furtherback than usual with the fast early pace but moved into contention early in the straight and kicked clear in impressive style into the final furlong. The handicapper has already assessed him another 2lb higher than the 6lb penalty he carried here for his recent win and this will bring another rethink that will make life tough especially as the ground dries out.

Firesong was unlucky not to give the winner more to think about as he travelled well, making stealthy progess through the pack up the straight before left nowhere to go inside the last two furlongs. That he recovered well enough despite having to switch right suggests with a clear run he would have been much closer.

Libre travelled well chasing the leaders early in the straight but he could not quicken into the final two furlongs and was partly responsible for Firesong's unlucky run.

Ermine Grey, who set the strong pace, did well to cling on to sixth but that does not say much about the rest, although Barataria, coming back from 350 days off, caught the eye. He was settled last aftera slow start but travelled sweetly. He stayed on without being given a hard time for a honourable seventh which can clearly be built on by his new connections.
