NOTNOWCATO was stepping up in class and distance after signing off last year with a Newmarket handicap winner over a mile off 96. Held up behind Rocamadour in the main group, which raced a little away from the trio that stuck to the far rail, he was pulled out in the last quarter of a mile and showed a nice turn of foot to lead well inside the final furlong and win going away after Kew Green got first run. There is stamina on the dam's side and his trainer does not anticipate him having any trouble getting a mile and a quarter. There is probably better still to come.
Kew Green came here race-fit after three runs on the all-weather and he did as well as could be expected in second, well clear of the rest and beaten only by a much younger rival who is still on the upgrade. He probably won't be easy to place now.
Tolpuddle travelled nicely but couldn't match the first two for pace. This was his sixth run since the turn of the year - three were over hurdles and he won at Cork in January - and he will be out again at Sandown next week, where he will bid to improve on last year's third in the Brigadier Gerard.
Tucker, three times a winner here, was held up to get the trip. He made some effort on the outside but was beaten a long way and failed to truly convince at the trip.
Rocamadour came to hand quickly last year but didn't look wound up for this first run since July. He took the main group along, pressing Kings Point for the overall lead, but had to be pushed along vigorously to hold his place three out and then dropped right away to finish 13 lengths behind the winner. This was a disappointing return, but he will come on for the race and should not be hard to place if he recovers last year's form, as he is bordering on Group 1 class yet doesn't have any penalties.
This didn't look Spanish Don's sort of race, and veteran Calcutta was a bit out of his depth.
Bahar Shumaal has yet to beat another horse in three races since his Irish Derby fifth. (GD)
