KING'S CAPRICE is not straightforward and had not won since 2004, but he has plenty of ability and he was clearly on good terms with himself here. Always to the fore, racing close to the far rail and pressing overall leader Prince Of Thebes, he got the better of that battle approaching the final furlong but found the second coming back at him at the finish. His last win had been on soft ground, but he coped fine with this quicker surface and is also effective on Polytrack.
Prince Of Thebes had disappointed when favourite for the same Kempton race as King's Caprice made his reappearance in, but he too seemed to have come on considerably for the run.
Game Lad lacked a recent run, but he looked ready enough and put up a big effort to ‘win' the stands' side race. He looks the sort to make a better four-year-old and will be placed to advantage before too long.
All Ivory caught the eye putting in very good work up the stands' side to almost collar Game Lad. He was off the bridle a long way out and had to be switched around the weakening front-runner Paper Talk for his effort, but he made up five lengths or so on Game Lad and will be one to take a keen interest in next time, especially if he is stepping back up to a mile.
Fantaisiste, fit from her win on Polytrack at Kempton, ran well again off her 6lb higher mark, and River Royale was another far from disgraced considering his year's absence, although he never looked like winning.
Josh hasn't quite found his form yet for new connections, but Indian Trail ran better than his finishing position suggests, threatening briefly on the stands' side approaching the final furlong but then fading as if he will be suited by a return to six furlongs, the distance of his last three wins.
There were negative performances at the back of the field by both Compton's Eleven and Millennium Force, which following the earlier disappointment of Rocamadour suggests Mick Channon's runners need treating with a bit of caution for the time being. (GD)
