GALIENT set out to make all the running and achieved it after a dramatic incident as Alhaajes hung badly right into him just inside the final furlong.
Galient looks a resolute galloper and trainer Michael Jarvis mentioned the Queen's Vase, which this colt's dam won, back over the tough two miles at Ascot as a likely target. He was beaten a long way in his Newbury mile maiden last autumn and has obviously progressed both for a winter and this step up in trip. The way he galloped through the final furlong leading home a strung-out finish suggests he can progress again as he moves up in trip.
Alhaajes travelled well through the race and looked the likelier winner over two furlongs out but he telegraphed what was about to happen as he got badly unbalanced on the gradients and put under pressure he dived right just as the winner edged off the rail and his rider did well to stay on board as Alhaajes clipped heels and pitched onto his nose. His rider lost his irons and could not recover, losing second, but Alhaajes deserves rating no more than a length off the winner. It may be that his stamina was being stretched but like the winner he was stepping up considerably on his only run last season.
Nothing else threatened but with Souffleur and Profitable next home, the form looks decent.
Startengo ran as if something was amiss as he was whirling his tail through the race. (BJ)
