SAVILLE ROAD, who was well touted for this, was visually impressive, for he was going nowhere two out, stumbled momentarily over a furlong out, still had four in front of him going into the final furlong, yet appeared to take off up the hill and won a shade comfortably. However, that impression flatters him, as the sectional times provided by TurfTrax show that Dark Islander and King Orchisios were slowing down markedly and he simply wasn't slowing at quite such a rate. This confirmed he gets 7f well, but he is the sort who will start at shorter odds than he ought to next time.
Dark Islander looked sure to win when finally wearing down King Orchisios but he didn't quite get home. The trip would not have been a problem - he is bred to be suited by a mile and more - and he may just have needed the race. It was a promising enough reappearance from a colt who ought to make a better 3yo.
Upper Hand went into the race with the best juvenile form, but he didn't go on last year after his Richmond second and his stable has had a few disappoint at this meeting. He was well below form.
Bouboulina had been given 1,000 Guineas and Oaks entries after impressing on the AW at Lingfield in October on her only juvenile start. She was the subject of encouraging reports, but the Lingfield race has not worked out at all well - none of the six who had come out of it had even been placed - and she didn't run much of a race. She may well need further, but this was hardly auspicious.(GD)
