Richard Hannon made it a hat-trick of winners in this race after the colts Cool Creek last year and Cornus in 2004. Cool Creek contested the Coventry and won a conditions race later and post-race talk suggested Gilded could go on to Royal Ascot, although she was bought to win the Newbury Super Sprint by connections who won that race with If Paradise.
Gilded was held up this time and wandered left when initially going after the leaders before hanging right into the final furlong. She again cleared away impressively under pressure to win a shade cosily in the end. She continues to improve with her racing, having finished behind Il Palio and Urban Warrior on her all-weather debut.
Debut winners Lord Charles and Chief Editor ran similar races, jumping smartly and helping set the pace. Both kept on well to finish clear of the rest to give the form a solid look.
Urban Warrior could not go the pace despite having the rails draw, but he kept on when it was all over. He remains interesting when able to step up in trip.
Resignation was slowly away, but recovered quickly to show pace before getting tired in the final furlong. He can improve for the experience.
Il Palio showed speed again, but ruined his chance by hanging badly left to finish near the stands' side rail.
Love In May looked uneasy on the undulations in the second half of the race, and she can do better on a flat track.[BJ]
