This was far from a true test with a steady early pace, but it looked a case of MARKOVITCH winning despite that - he is set to step up in trip and class for the Chester Vase next and holds a Prix du Jockey Club entry. He was best placed in holding the rails position in leading, but Mashaahed and Degas Art looked to be running over him going to the final furlong. He rallied and was aided by the other two getting involved in a bumping match. He was well on top at the line, suggesting further will bring more improvement.
Degas Art ruined his chance by hanging right in the final furlong, and was probably lucky to keep second as he put off Mashaahed as the meat in the sandwich. He has been gelded since his good run here last autumn over 7f.
Mashaahed had beaten the winner fair and square last autumn and looked sure to repeat the feat as he cruised into contention with his rider oozing confidence, but put under pressure both with the whip and two rivals edging in on him, this Derby and Dante entry was found wanting.
The rest were well beaten, with La Estrella weakening before the final furlong, but still holding onto fifth.
Paradise Street was sixth into the final furlong before weakening and being allowed to come home in her own time, and deserves rating better than the bare form.
Newcomers Hasayaz and Seeking Straight were too green to do themselves justice, getting outpaced as they lacked experience before staying on steadily, but the form is probably modest, suggesting a handicap route in time.[BJ]
