The pace was pedestrian until the ATLANTIC WAVES upped the ante going to the final three furlongs. He rightly earns the plaudits for a typically dour front-running performance, rallying to have his head in front on the line, but not many would back against Olympian Odyssey winning the rematch of this pair of Sadler's Wells colts, which could happen in the Dante.
Bookmakers, many admitting that liablities on the tipping-line backed winner tied their hands, kept Atlantic Waves generally the shorter of the pair, although Olympian Odyssey appeared the best horse in the race. It would also bedangerous to get carried away by that descrepency and take the 25-1 offered by Stan James about the runner-up, as the bare form leaves a quantum leap to being a Derby winner - the five who finished on top of one another are only rated around the 100 mark.
Atlantic Waves probably won despite conditions, as he did not impress going to post and looked uneasy on the ground, but he kept sticking out his head and got the reward. He should be seen to better effect over the longer trip in the Dante at York, which is often a front-runner's track.
Connections of Olympian Odyssey, who still holds the 2,000 Guineas entry, rightly fancy their chances of reversing the form in future. He was climbing all over the winner ahead of him from two furlongs out but only got a sliver of daylight up the rail inside the final furlong, which left his rider with no room to do more than shake the reins at him and he still only just failed to get past. The strong impression was that he would have been a clear winner, but by how far is guesswork. He looks to be progressing apace and can make the step into the lower Group ranks.
Dont Dili Dali did not let herself down, arguably beaten by her Listed penalty for her Masaka win. She has done her outside chances in her new intended target of the Irish 1,000 Guineas no harm.
Rajeem was similarly undone by her Listed-race penalty and she too ran with great credit, getting much nearer Dont Dili Dali than at Kempton. She can make her mark at this level, most certainly if back against her own sex.
Morghim was disappointing but sat off the steady pace before getting into contention. He was the least experienced of this field and can progress from the experience.
Judge dwarfed many of these and travelled easily within himself before finding the sprint home all against him. He was not given a hard time and is sure to improve on the bare form.
Salt Man got uneasy in the stalls and was lit up early before not surprisingly dropping away in the sprint home.(BJ)
