Aeroplane, who cracked his pelvis and was looked after when second in a Leicester maiden over 6f last year, is held in high regard, and one can see why. Having been settled on the rail with the leaders in his sights, he was eased out for his challenge with under 2f to go and picked up in style when asked to go and win his race, quickening right away inside the final furlong. The Heron Stakes at Goodwood, won last year by Proclamation, could be next on the agenda, and Peter Chapple-Hyam reckons he might be St James's Palace Stakes material.
Star Crowned was a big disappointment at Wolverhampton last week, but an Irish 2,000 Guineas entry suggested he was well regarded and the application of first-time blinkers had the desired effect. He was in the first two throughout and kept on well enough, though no match at all for the winner.
Alhaitham, second twice here last autumn and another with big entries, was a firm favourite and showed up well all of the way from his outside draw. He is sure to win a race before too long, but he had his chance here and is seemingly no star.
Loyal Royal showed solid form in a relatively busy first season. Stepping up in distance here, he ran below his best yet seemed to stay well enough.
Serevi had a fitness advantage over most of these, but he was again found wanting. A handicap mark of 80 overestimates him on the evidence available so far.
Disappointment of the race was Irish challenger Pescatorio, who was one of last season's biggest hype horses. Weak in the market here, he wasn't well away and was among the backmarkers throughout. Kieren Fallon was at work on him soon after halfway and picked up his whip with 2f to go, but it was to no avail. He has evidently shown plenty at Ballydoyle, and the drying ground and his inexperience are legitimate enough excuses, but this was hardly an auspicious first appearance in public.[GD]
