Bumper winner SMART MOVER had been beaten nine times over hurdles, but had been paced on several occasions and earned a BHB rating of 110. Held up, he made a mistake in rear at the fourth but improved towards the end of the back straight and finally got his head in front in a driving finish on the run-in, having looked inclined to edge left under pressure. He is thought to appreciate this quicker ground, and may enjoy greater success when he goes chasing next season.
Front running Original Thought is officially rated just 2lb the winner's inferior and stays well. He might well have won but for clouting the second last.
The 2004 Grand National third Lord Atterbury ran better than he had on his reappearance, but he was under pressure before the straight and the level he ran to here would not have significantly enhanced his prospects for this year's renewal.
The first four pulled a long way clear of Keswick, who looks ordinary and is qualified for handicaps now. Chepstow bumper winner Zanzibar Boy jumped the first very big and then, having turned for home bang in contention, was not knocked about when beaten. Both look chasers in the making.
