A big field and a modest bunch. The early pace didn't look that strong and they finished in something of a heap, with no obvious eye-catchers.
This represents improved form from NEW MISCHIEF, who had disappointed on two previous starts in handicaps but appreciated the opportunity to race on better ground, having won a bumper on good to firm at Cheltenham. He is still relatively unexposed and can not go up too much for this, so it will be no surprise if he picks up another handicap this spring before going chasing next season.
Zouave, making his handicap debut, did not really begin to make headway until two out, but he finished with a rattle and would have been in front in another stride. He has been tried over a range of distances, but on this evidence is not going to have any trouble staying a bit further than this.
The Castilian cruised into contention on the inside under a sympathetic ride, but he has flattered on occasions in the past and is not a betting proposition. His rider seemed intent on coaxing him home, but having touched down over the last still looking full of running he found nothing and lost two placesclose home. One to avoid.
Point-to-point winner Penny Park was never far away, and although beaten fair and square he showed enough to suggest he can win a novice handicap over further.
Top-weight Barclay Boy improved to get into a challenging position, but he was beaten with two to jump.
