BUREAUCRAT is essentially a speed horse, rated 88 after two fast ground wins on the Flat, and he was at home with quick underfoot conditions and aneasy lead. Having made the running, nicely clear most of the way, he was still on the bridle between the last two hurdles when all those behind him were under pressure, going nowhere. He was just pushed clear on the run-in for a ready success, and while he'll have to improve again to come into the reckoning or Aintree, which is the plan, he is most progressive and an ideal type for the track.
The Italian St Leger winner Backbord settled better and is improving. He had no excuse, but showed enough here to suggest he will win an ordinary juvenile.
Mahogany Blaze did best of the three previous winners, who each conceded 7lb, and having raced towards the rear he was going on at the finish. Having come the bumper route, he probably needs a stiffer test.
Sea Wall, in the same ownership, had just about the best Flat form, but having improved into a challenging position starting up the straight he was struggling before the second last.
Le Corvee, another with useful Flat form, lost his place on the turn and was already in trouble when he hit the third-last, where Sandown winner Quasimodo also made a mistake and weakened. Both were wel below form.
Mac Federal was a last-flight faller for the second successive time. He wasn't far away, but was plainly held.
*Noel Fehily reported Patronage was sore.
*J Levins reported that Carpet Ride jumped poorly down the back straight.
