An average novice hurdle. WOGAN, runner-up on his previous two efforts, had shown enough on his hurdles debut last time to suggest this was within his compass and he did not let his supporters down when grinding out victory. On this evidence he should have no problems getting a bit further but his real future lies over fences.

Shining Strand was on much better behaviour than when not consenting to race at Doncaster last month. Although he obviously has his quirks he has enough talent to go onebetter in the near future in a similar affair, even allowing for his penalty.
