NORTHERN DESERT had work to do to reverse the form with Glencalvie on the evidence of their recent Wolverhampton run but he was much better suited by the way this race panned out and, having struck the front approaching the final furlong, he held on gamely in the closing stages as the dangers closed in. Connections are keen to take advantage of his much lower turf rating in the spring but he'll need to pull out more if he's to be competitive off his new all-weather mark after he's been reassessed.
Farewell Gift tried to make all and, after having been headed by the winner, he rallied in the final furlong and was gaining on the leader at the finish. This represented a return to form and he's suited by this trip.
Swift Oscar ran well on his return from an absence suggesting he retains all of the ability he showed on this surface last season, while the well supported Polonius, who was returning from an absence of 546 days, reared up at the start and lost valuable ground. Although still travelling strongly at the back, he was unable to make up ground in the home straight.
*Robert Winston, the rider of Zarabad, reported that the colt ran too free.
