Most of these had blown away the cobwebs recently on the all-weather but Danehill Willy, making his seasonal return after 177 days and being gelded, was the one to lay down the law under top weight and only AMEEQ could get past at the end of a truly-run contest.

Ameeq won his maiden last time having had a run over hurdles for new connections first. He had been held in some regard previously, having been sent off joint-favourite at the track last year. Whether hurdling woke his ideas up or he is a late developer, he now looks progressive from a lowly mark.

St Savarin was staying on when it was all over as has been his profile, suggesting a step-up in trip on easy ground this spring could bring reward.

Celticello is to be avoided as he had to be led to post riderless, and after chasing the pace he downed tools into the home bend.
