Azurine ran too freely up with the pace to do herself justice and middle-distance performers were not seen to best effect.
Derby entrant DragonDancer and Oaks entry Virgin Islands were left toiling behind runaway winner AWATUKI, who travelled best through the race, tracking the pace, and cleared away, just pushed out, suggesting he can be rated better than the bare form.
Virgin Islands was green on this belated racecourse debut. She responded to being pushed along out of the back straight and made rapid headway but did not see which way the winner went, although keeping on for a clear second, suggesting she can improve both for theexperience and a step up in trip.
Newport Boy was struggling, outpaced into the final four furlongs and last of the main group into the home straight. When switched widest midtrack, he finished with a flourish. This was a step up on his debut over six furlongs last year and another increase in trip should bring reward even though he is related to good sprinter Cradle Days and decent miler King's Ironbridge.
