Heron's Ghyll, down in grade, gave chase to the winner two from home but could soon make no impression. This trip might just have stretched him.
Welsh Dane, on whom a visor replaced the cheekpieces, made the frame yet again but his consistency is earning him no favours from the handicapper.Metal Detector travelled well in the cheekpieces but did not find a lot from the approach to the third last.
Nothing got involved from behind, but Erins Lass did come home quite well and seemed to stay this longer trip.
Most of the interest centred around Amberleigh House, who was having his final warm-up for the Grand National. The 2004 Aintree winner, who is rated much lower over hurdles, chased the pace until past the fifth last before dropping away to finish last, and while not too much should be read into this performance, surely an honourable clear round is the most to be expected of him in the big one next month.
