Most of these had some sort of question marks against them. For GAVROCHE, the uncertainty surrounded whether he would stay a mile and a half in testing ground, but he answered the question in no uncertain fashion, not only staying every inch of the trip but also unleashing a potent turn of foot to settle the contest. Settled beautifully in rear by Martin Dwyer, he came there full of running and quickened most impressively when asked.

Three times a winner last year, when he posted back-to-back wins at Epsom, he is a horse riding an upward curve, and there could well be more to come. He will be worth a crack in Listed company, but in the meantime the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot might well be worth considering.

Nawamees has gonea long time without a win on the Flat, and he lost his chance here when outpaced early in the straight. He did manage to produce a strong challenge inside the final furlong but the winner was much too good for him.

Massif Centrale produced an encouraging performanceto take fourth. Always prominent, he couldn't quicken as well as the principals, but this was much better than his reappearance run and showed he retains his ability.

Diego Cao and Favourita were both easily left behind.
