FINAL VERSE was theoretically putting the 2,000 Guineas form to the test for the first time, as he was the first horse to run again since then, but he didn't need to run to anywhere near that form to beat this lot as he had upwards of a stone in hand of them all. Jumped straight out into the lead in a bid to avoid getting involved in a tactical affair - in which he might be inclined to pull again (he was on the keen side in the Guineas) - he was pressed by Deepwater Bay in the straight, racing towards the middle of the track, but he was always holding him and was going away at the finish. Bruce Raymond, representing the owner, reckons he would have been happier with a lead, but he was satisfied overalland said the St James's Palace Stakes might be a possibility. He might get further in due course, and he is certainly bred to do so.
The filly Antica was stepping up from handicap company and also moving up in distance. The combination of the two proved too much for her.
Red Somerset looked good when winning his maiden at Kempton, but this ground was an unknownfor him and he shaped as though he didn't handle it. He has a mark of 89 but is clearly thought better than that and might be interesting on better ground in a decent handicap like the Britannia.
Renderoc is relatively exposed and had a stiffish task on this return from a break.
