Short of room for most of the straight having been held up in rear, he only saw daylight very late in the race, which would not have been a bad thing for a horse who might not be the most enthusiastic. He does, however, have bags of ability, and is probably a fair bit better than his mark here suggested. That said, he needs cajoling, so will never be an entirely safe betting proposition.
San Hernando was another who did not look that straightforward, carrying his head a little high and then shifting left close home. Even so, he did respond to his rider's urgings and put up a grand effort on his first Flat start since January 2005. This track suits him, and he's handicapped to win another race soon.
Establishment has been enjoying a new lease of life this season, and he ran his fourth good race from four starts this year. Returning to turf after three smart Polytrack efforts, he was not quite quick enough to mount a challenge but he boxed on tenaciously and was finishing strongly. The two-and-a-half-mile Ascot Stakes must be the objective once again, and he could not be discounted while in such good heart.
Salute has untapped potential at this trip, and there was a lot to like about his run. He would have been fourth but for being squashed against the rail close home, and on this showing he can win over two miles. Stablemate Global Challenge is now extremely well treated on his old form but he did not look particularly cooperative under pressure.
Goodwood regular Theatre tends not to win and he again flattered only to deceive, while Pretty Star was up there from the off before running out of puff. He did not run a bad race and might well find a small pot before too long.
Double Obsession set the pace but had nothing to give inside the final quarter-mile, whereas Ocean Of Storms might have had a lot to give but did not want to give it and as good as refused to race.
