For the first time on the day the jockeys elected to move towards the middle of the track up the straight.
This was quite a classy little seven-furlong handicap and included a number of horses used to contesting races at a higher level. POLAR MAGIC has often run like a horse who could land a big prize - he started 4-1 favourite for last year's Totesport International - but his only win last year came at Southwell. That win came on his reappearance, as did this one, and one could not but help but be impressed by the manner in which he went clear once the question was popped a furlong out. Effective on soft ground, he has a good turn of foot and could yet exploit it to land one of the top handicaps, as he's the sort of horse who keeps a little up his sleeve.
Material Witness's form rather tailed off at the end of last season but he loves Goodwood and ran another admirable race at his favourite venue. Having set a strong gallop he maintained it, and if this wasn't just about the track he couldbe dangerous in the coming months, as he is not badly handicapped.
The ultra-consistent Red Spell was also hampered by Polar Magic's move, but he was weakening at the time, while Shot To Fame got tired late on after racing prominently. However, given the latter'sshrewd trainer and his natural ability there will surely be a race for him somewhere at some point.
Stagbury Hill and Marshman - who reared at the start - were long out the back but both were coming home to quite good effect.
