It looked as though RISING CROSS had the race in the bag when hitting the front inside the final furlong and quickening away, but SOFT CENTRE, 12lb inferior to Rising Cross on BHB figures, had other ideas and there was no splitting the pair as they crossed the line.
Rising Cross was considered unlucky not to have finished closer to Nyarhini at Kempton, and on that evidence she would have been as suited by the extra distance as her apparently more fancied rival. Fortunately for connections, what Rising Cross lacks in size, she makes up for in heart, and having travelled kindly close to the pace, she quickened two lengths clear inside the last furlong before being joined in the final strides.
Soft Centre looked to face a big task given her BHB rating of just 84, but she clearly improved significantly for the step up in trip. She took time to pick up after coming under pressure passing the three-furlong marker but flew inside the final furlong, suggesting she'd do even better upped to a mile and a half, an opinion her jockey confirmed.
Suzy Bliss helped to set the modest early gallop but having tried to wind things up three out, she was soon under pressure and weakened approaching the final furlong. Her trainer reported that she needs fast ground to show her best, so the easing of the ground counted against her.
Jaish looked as though she may come on for the run and found little after being shaken up three out. The disappointment of the race was Deveron, who looked plenty fit enough, but her jockey reported that his mount was unable to lead, which was the plan. Even so, this was a miserable performance and her response to being asked to quicken was non-existent. .
