SMEATHE'S RIDGE had shown ability over hurdles over a variety of trips but had edged down the handicap and was allowed to start his chasing career off that mark. Extensive schooling for this slow learner of all skills was repaid as he jumped like an old hand and had worn down Sett Aside when that rival got rid of his jockey at the last.
He held off the rally of top weight Malko de Beaumont on the short run in, but just what the bare form amounts to is debatable and his future will depend on how the handicapper reacts, although there should be more improvement to come from this lightly raced eight-year-old.
Malko de Beaumont had hinted at better to come over fences from his debut effort that ended in a fall. A similarly lightly raced individual, he made eye-catching headway at the end of the back straight and kept battling away under his big weight.
Spider Boy rallied for a distant third but remains a maiden although able to continue to pick up placed money.
Inaki made stealthy progress in the second half of the race and went third before his suspect stamina ran out.
Spanish Tan travelled well enough tracking the pace into the third last but was being held by the front two when going wrong and was pulled up around the home bend and subsequently reported lame by the course vet.
