A highly creditable third over an inadequate trip on his chasing debut at Market Rasen last month, he was made more use of on this occasion and picked up again when Jackson came to him after the last, seeing out the three-mile trip well.
Unlike those in behind, his jumping was fluent from the word go and connections are now eyeing the Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase at the Festival, although he will need to improve a fair bit on this to play any sort of a hand in that event.
A mistake at the second-last cost useful hurdler Jackson dear, but this was still a big step up on his Hereford debut where he jumped abysmally and, as he should improve with further experience, it will be disappointing if he cannot find a small race somewhere. Good, fast ground suits him ideally and it would not be the end of the world if connections kept him for a summer campaign as he would be a smart type for the time of year.
Rakalackey continually lost ground at his fences and has yet to convince as a chaser. He was a decent hurdler and it has been somewhat surprising this brother to smart chaser Young Spartacus has yet to transfer his ability to the larger obstacles. [MB]
