Beaver Patrol had been a quick two-year-old, winning the big Curragh sales race, but like a lot of good youngsters he was difficult to place last year before reverting to sprinting. He looks to have found his level back rated in the high 80s and another hike would leave him vulnerable again. He is in the Wokingham but gets a 5lb penalty, which is offputting.
Prince Namid came from a hopeless position at the top of the straight, another to take the wide midtrack route for a clear run. He would have won in another few strides and as he had the worst of the draw and was ridden to get the trip, the handicapper may not have got to him despite his close attention.
Bahamian Pirate has had to ply his trade at a higher level since his Nunthorpe win on soft ground but showed here he can have a say in big handicap sprints now he has been dropped to two figures.
Indian Trail travelled well as he made a move angling off his inside rail but was squeezed out and could notrecover.
Gifted Gamble weakened rapidly in the final furlong, having looked like finishing in the first six, but Machinist could never land a blow from his midfield position despite edging closer late.
Just James was up to his old tricks but even by his standards he gave them a huge start and his rider let him coast round.
Swinbrook also lost all chance with a slow start, but Rising Shadow, who also trailed towards the rear, was the strongest finisher, having to angle in and out around rivals in the last two furlongs.
Commando Scott, who came downhill gingerly, Funfair Wane and Mine Behind looked uneasy on the course and ground. [BJ]
