ALFIE NOAKES benefited from being kept wide midtrack in coming from last to first in the straight while others suffered troubled runs. That said, he was slightly intimidated by Gavroche edging out to him as he challenged before galloping on strongly. He is quite a gangly gelding, so was not certain to be suited to the track, but he reversed Goodwood form with Gavroche, as he was entitled to on the revised terms.
Gavroche raced exuberantly under restraint at the back and moved up looking all over the winner, but with him edging left and leader Consular going right to sandwich Vengeance, all three were knocked off their stride. Gavroche picked up again but was nailed on the post. His rating is getting towards a twilight zone for handicaps, apart from the big ones.
Consular rediscovered his form with his rating having eased back below 90 and it would be no surprise if he again ran a sound race in the King George V at Royal Ascot.
Solent was buffeted around when weakening and Massif Centrale dropped away in the straight to finish feelingly.
*Gavroche was reported to have hung left. [BJ]
