A good-quality field for this very valuable contest but it featured few obviously progressive handicappers, several had questions to answer on the score of their effectiveness on the drying ground or their will-to-win, and once again a steady pace compounded the difficulty of coming from behind. So the victory of ADMIRAL owed plenty to a masterful ride from John Egan, soon in front, setting only a steady pace, gradually winding it up and judging things to perfection so as to have enough left to hold off his strong-finishing rivals. The twists and turns of this track seemed to suit this keen sort and it remains very much to be seen whether he would be able to confirm the form on a more conventional course, particularly if taken on in front.

Vinando showed himself a decent stayer when fourth in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket last year and confirmed it on this very different course, running on having always been in touch, and though he is not easy to win with he should continue to give a good account in the big staying handicaps.

Greenwich Meantime had looked much-improved in winning his two previous starts this season and his defeat here does not detract at all from that impression as he was waited with in a race not run at all to suit, made headway over 3f out and ran on in the straight despite having to take a circuitous route but was unable to catch the winner. His come-from-behind style makes him vulnerable in any big field but he is well worth another chance. Dancing Bay is another who does not seem easy to win with but he ran another good race, running on, and has slipped back to a fairish mark - he is worth another crack at the Queen Alexandra Stakes provided the ground is not too firm at Royal Ascot.
