Analyis of the race

Not a strong beginners' event but a game win by GREAT AS GOLD, who had been placed on his three previous starts over fences. A thorough stayer who acts well in testing ground, he made a mistake at the eighth, where his rider lost an iron, but he worked his way back into the race only to idle on the run-in after leading two out. Rated 115, he is the sort who will progress with racing, but the ground will always be an important factor with him so his campaign may be limited this term, but is the sort who should pay his way in staying handicaps next season.

This pair were clear of Sports Express, who shaped better with cheekpieces back on, and Moonzie Laird.
