PLAIN CHAMPAGNE ultimately won well, forging clear into the finalfurlong and while Zaville was denied any room until the final furlong, she was out in pursuit early enough to make it a race and could not get close. The winner, 8lb out of the handicap here and due to go down another 1lb from the weekend, could be back on Sunday as her winner's penalty should guarantee her a run in the same grade, but over 10f which might just be too sharp for her as she took time to get on top here. However, she is obviously progressing and settled here unlike in her last two efforts from wide-out draws on the all-weather.
Zaville was caught in a pocket running downhill into the straight and looked to have plenty to offer but when clear she looked to hang left and could not reel in the winner while finishing nicely clear of therest. This was an improved effort, coinciding with a return to a sounder surface and that looks the key to her. She has just been dropped to make this 65-rating ceiling, which looks her level.
Kathryn Janeway was reported to have missed the break; Time For You was reported to have moved badly.
