Analyis of the race
Plenty pulled for their heads early to suggest a steady pace and although the time compared favourably with the old standard here, the course contours have been changed considerably and the time suggests it is now an easier straight course. TRAFALGAR BAY and Pearly Wey had both risen in the ratings in defeat when third and second respectively at Salisbury last time in a race that looked above average and does so even more after the pair dominated the finish. Traflagar Bay had bolted with today's jockey on his intended return at Newmarket but looks to be coming on in leaps and bounds for tender handling. He was taken down early and settled at the back, which gave the initiative to Pearly Wey, who kicked on soon after halfway and looked to have taken the race apart. Trafalgar Bay was fortunate to get a clear run hard up against the stands' rail to just catch his rival, which he was entitled to do on revised terms for his Salisbury beating. Both look above-average performers but are going to have to take another step up the rung after these displays, which will make life difficult. Connections felt the Jersey at the Royal meeting was the only possible race but admitted he was some way off that Group class on his bare form to date. Burning Incense did not get as clear a run as the winner before keeping on, but this was a third placing for this maiden. Bajan Parkes made a promising enough seasonal return but may be struggling with the handicapper on this evidence as his Bath maiden win has not exactly been franked. Starlight Gazer deserves rating better than the bare form as he had nowhere to go for a furlong and, when seeing daylight inside the final furlong, he kept on to suggest he would have been much closer with a clear run. Didn't We, Tous Les Deux and Matuza, the last-named having got agitated standing in the stalls, gave themselves no chance by racing far too keenly.(BJ)
