Time may tell that Lacdoudal faced an impossible task giving the winner 24lb, especially after the easing of the ground following the previous evening's downpour. Without State Of Play in the race he would have been a good winner himself, so all credit to him for another sterling effort.
Supreme Prince showed a little bit more, but Chauvinist didn't convince as a stayer, and Tikram needed urging along from halfway and was not on a going day.
Several of the leading fancies were disappointing, among them Fair Prospect, who made mistakes, Joaaci, who was never going and was pulled up with a circuit still to go, Billyvoddan, who was shoved along going out on the final circuit and had dropped out when he was hampered and unseated his rider two out, and Mount Clerigo, who made at least one serious mistake.
