Analyis of the race

A handicap in which novices enjoy a fine record, and for the second successive season two of them fought out the finish. JACKS CRAIC's defeat of Nyrche made it eight novice wins in the last 12 runnings, a fact well worth bearing in mind next year. However, Jacks Craic was unusual in that he came from well off the pace on a track that tends to favour horses ridden handily. Jacks Craic was just an ordinary handicapper over hurdles, but he has gone from strength to strength since he was switched to fences and had already made his mark in handicap company. Given the usual patient ride in a race in which Hand Inn Hand went off much too fast in front and went through the top of fence after fence, his jumping wasn't brilliant, but he had tagged on to the tail of the leading group as they turned for home and he showed the best speed from the second-last. John Spearing will see if there is a race for him at Cheltenham next month, but failing that he might put him away. However, there are alternatives, including the two novice chases won by Locksmith at Ayr last year.

The Grand Annual fourth Nyrche was returning to the scene of his disastrous exit two out in a novice back in November. Having gone to the front in the back straight there was drama again two out when he dived sharply left, but he recovered his composure to have his chance again at the last. Jacks Craic had a bit too much speed, but he confirmed himself a useful two-miler, and one who looks sure to pay his way again next season.

Irish challenger Mansony looked to be a real improver, having made all in two recent novices, but he put in a moody display this time, reluctant to jump off and always trailing in last. The Grand Annual winner Greenhope never looked like getting into contention this time and was in trouble on the home turn. The ground would have been on the dead side for him. Demi Beau looked an interesting one, but he struggled after an early mistake.[GD]
