He led home two similarly progressive young staying chasers in New Alco and Direct Flight, with only Lord Rodney gaining any credit in staying on without landing a blow behind this trio. While the pace was strong, it did not stop Mon Mome picking it up early on the last circuit to play to his abundant stamina. With his promising young rider throwing everything at him from the second-last, he was not for passing but was all out in the final 100 yards.
Mon Mome continues to defy the handicapper, who raised him another 5lb for his good second in the Kim Muir on ground quicker than he would have wanted, with his three wins having come on soft or heavy. Both he and New Alco look exciting prospects for big staying handicaps when getting their conditions.
New Alco, representing last year's winning stable who sent on Joes Edge to win the Scottish National, also found conditions coming right for him. Although he has won over shorter in easier races, he looked booked for third between the last two before rallying late on the run-in to suggest another step up in trip will suit.
Lord Rodney was put on the back foot by an early mistake and was never going to land a blow. While others cried enough, he kept on gallantly and was edging closer all the way up the straight to suggest he needs further. He can be forgiven his effort on the unique Uttoxeter heavy ground and still has a progressive profile.
New Field edged closer under what looked a confident ride from five out but he was making no more progress when stumps were drawn going to the last, while Von Origny made a forward move around the home bend but surprisingly weakened.
While it was disappointing that Bob The Builder, Well Tutored and Roznic exited early, the form still looks strong. [BJ]
