Stamina won the day for PANGBOURNE, who had hung left and found no extra in the final furlong of the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham but had blinkers on instead of a visor. He led from nine furlongs out and was still in front entering the straight, was outpaced over a furlong out but rallied to regain the advantage in the closing stages. He may be a shade quirky but should make a decent novice over hurdles next season, though he may well need further than two miles.
Tidal Bay ran a storming race and improved markedly on the form he showed when runner-up at Wetherby on his debut - and there is almost certainly better again to come, as he still looked green but made ground quickly to lead inside the final furlong, only to be caught late on. He is sure to win a bumper, at least, and looks the sort who could make a very useful jumper for his underrated trainer.
Sword Of Damascus ran a good race on this step up in class, always in touch, and looks to be going the right way. Ringaroses was never nearer than at the finish - he is out of top-class staying hurdler and stamina looks his forte on this evidence, but this was still a decent effort upped in grade.
Astarador was not disgraced in stiffer company, but Wichita Lineman had no excuses and seems not to be as good a bumper performer as his half-brother Rhinestone Cowboy. Pepporoni Pete again failed to confirm the promise of his debut, while highly touted Warwick winner Mam Ratagan could not make the step up in class. [DC]
